Tutorial 1 Information Technology and Ethical Issues

Answers (2009) defines Information Technology as the development, installation, and implementation of computer systems and applications.
Technology has become a way of life for our society. It is hard to find an aspect of our lives that isn't related to technology in someway.
In my life I use a range of technology for example computers, cell phones, telephones, Television, MySky, GPS, just to name a few.
Technology was used on my all of my fieldwork placements by myself and the Occupational therapy team; giving children learning activities on the computer, using digital cameras to record information about houses and modifications, to record notes on the computer and more.
Ethical implications that could arise from IT devices are people could be digitally photographed without their consent and be exploited through the media. If information is published on the internet from ‘a direct source’ people may believe incorrect information just because it was said on the internet.
Computer ethics can be defined as: "a branch of practical philosophy which deals with how computing professionals should make decisions regarding professional and social conduct.”Retrieved May 15, 2009, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/computer_ethics
Intellectual property can be defined as: "legal property rights over creations of the mind, both artistic and commercial, and the corresponding fields of law. Under intellectual property law, owners are granted certain exclusive rights to a variety of intangible assets, such as musical, literary, and artistic works; ideas, discoveries and inventions; and words, phrases, symbols, and designs.”

Social Justice can be defined as: "Mostly refers to an ideal of society, where "justice" refers to economic status rather than to the administration of laws. It is based on the idea of a society which gives individuals and groups fair treatment and a just share of the benefits of society. (Different proponents of social justice have developed different interpretations of what constitutes fair treatment and an impartial share.)"Retrieved May 15, 2009, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/social_justice.
Informed consent can be defined as: “When a person gives consent when and only when they are fully informed about the facts and consequences of an action.”Retrieved May 15, 2009, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/informed_consent

Understanding ITC and the ethical consideration will help us in the future to widen our knowledge about different information out there. A disadvantage is everyone is not using technology yet so some people (clients) may be left behind or disadvantaged.
